What is CTS in medical terms?

CTS A major disease emerging.

Discussion:

CTS is the most frequent peripheral neuropathy, and some but not all studies have linked it to occupational activity. Clarifying this connection has important implication for workers’ compensation programmes all across the world. It should also inform managers to established workplace policies to prevent overexposure to specific risk factors. We discovered reasonable evidence that using hand-held instruments on a regular and long-term basis increases the incidence of CTS. A considerable body of research also suggests that prolonged and highly repetitive wrist flexion or extension, especially when combined with a forceful grasp, increases the risk of CTS.(14).The approach we used to find research also had limitations. Literature other than the English was not reviewed.
Our study did not include manual cutting and sewing. it include electrically cutting, sewing and packaging by different tools. But M.Q Bickberket all studied the carpal tunnel syndrome among housewives. This type of manual work is thought to be a contributing element in the development of so called ‘spontaneous carpal tunnel syndrome.(15)Women are more likely than men to suffer from CTS. Carpal tunnel syndrome is more common in women who have Gynecological diseases. (16)Gender influences the prevalence of CTS. A demographic analysis revealed a male- to-female ratio of 1:3.(17)In this study according to our data male likely to have CTS than female because males are in more ratio in factories than women.
Other studies include the diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes mellitus, endocrine disorders and thyroid diseases have been reported to increase the incidence of carpal tunnel syndrome. Smoking and taking other snuff are not indicate the increase risk of CTS. (16)In our study all these factors are excluded and result of our study showed that there is increase risk of carpal tunnel syndrome with vibratory tool. And percentage showed that the CTS is more prevalent in the cutting department of the garments factories as vibratory cutting tools and repetitive motion is the cause of CTS.
According to Wieslander et al., the risk of developing carpal tunnel syndrome doubles after one year in a job requiring “repetitive wrist movement,”.(16)while Tanaka et al. Workers’ risks were approximately 6-fold higher, according to the study. Many times per minute bending/twisting the hand or wrist hour.(18). Kim et al. (2004) discovered that the frequency of CTS in a meat and fish processing factory involving repetitive labor was considerably higher. (19)
Although several research looked at correlations with cumulative wrist flexion or extension over the course of a working day, none of the studies evaluated hazards from persistent static wrist postures. IN our study we also collect the data about working experience and hours of work per day by which we can estimate the time of wrist posture.
Andersen et al. found an association between incident, self-reported sensory symptoms in the median nerve distribution and use of a right-handed mouse, with odds ratios of 2.6–3.2 for exposures of $20 h/week, in a carefully conducted study involving the follow-up of 5658 members of a Danish professional technicians union. However, no link was identified between keyboard use and symptoms, and the total prevalence of symptoms was low.(20)
In our study the minimum age of the workers we include is 18 years. We did not include workers below 18 years of age and maximum age of the participant was 59. While other studies did not clear the age limitation of the population.(21)Mean age was found 28 years with SD ±6.9 years. We also compare the presence of carpal tunnel syndrome in right and left hand. Many of studies did not made comparison between two hands.(22)Result of our study shows that right hand test resulted in a positive result for 19.7 %of the subjects and a negative result for 80.3 %. As a result,
19.7 % had carpal tunnel syndrome on the right side. whereas the left hand test resulted in a positive result for 21.3 % and a negative result for 78.7 % of the participants. As a result, 21.3 % of people had carpal tunnel syndrome on the left side.
According to Leclerc et al, 11.8 % in repetitive work, labor had carpal tunnel syndrome in one or both hands. Packaging had a high frequency (16.2%) (23). In our study cutting department had high frequency of CTS.
Precautions to avoid CTS were clearly defined, for example over use of the devices and incorrect posture can be avoided by using suitable ergonomic devices and tools and by giving the rest period in between the working hours.

  • Conclusion:

The Phalen Test-Right shows a significant association with gender,
educational status, marital status,
and employees’ department, according to the data. The Phalen Test-Left was also shown to have a substantial
connection with gender, educational status, marital status, and workers’
department. Carpal tunnel syndrome is more common among workers
in the cutting department.

  • Limitations & Recommendation:

1-
Covid-19 was major limitation because
we have to follow SOP’s while performing Phalen test on worker.

2-
We could make results more accurate by increasing sample
size.

3-
In our research study we only kept our study on CTS
limited to a particular population. But in the new research
we can further involve other populations i.e.
cashiers in a bank, beautician that do scrubbing, musicians who usually play stringed instruments.

4-
As in my study majority of workers were from age 18 to 59 years. But the next researchers can search in what age
group CTS is common. For example calculating the ratio of CTS in teenagers,
or in elder adults.

5-
We did not specify it on the basis of gender. But in
the next research we can also give a comparative analysis on the
occurrence of CTS in both genders and as well in transgender population
.
